The 2019 Toronto Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, September 5 with a slew of exciting films coming soon to theaters. Here are some of the films we're most excited about.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) could direct Tom Hanks to his next Oscar nomination for playing Fred Rogers in this film based on the true story of the friendship between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod (Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys - The Americans).
Joker
When the first trailer for Joker dropped, the origin story of Batman's painted villain, everyone compared it to Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver. It's uncommon for comic book movies to play the festival circuit, which is why it's a big deal that Todd Phillips' (The Hangover) film is playing at TIFF. The Venice Film Festival artistic director, where it also played, said of the movie: "It’s the most surprising film we’ve got this year…This one’s going straight to the Oscars."
Ford V. Ferrari
Matt Damon. Christian Bale. Really fast cars. Director James Mangold brings this story of American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Bale) as they battle corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
Harriet
Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times at the El Royale) stars as Harriet Tubman in this biopic about one of America's greatest heroes.
Judy
Another highly anticipated biopic is that of Judy Garland, with Academy Award winner Renee Zellweger playing the actress in a film that follows the legendary performer in the winter of 1968---a year and a half before she died.
